DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD FOR AUTOMATED CONTACTLESS DETERMINATION OF THE ANGULAR POSITION OF A SHAFT
(pp. 73-84)

Abstract. This article proposes a new method for automated, contactless determination of shaft angular position and rotational speed. This method is designed for use in heavy-duty industrial environments, particularly in material handling, construction, and road-building machinery. The method utilizes a triboelectric polytetrafluoroethylene tag applied to a metal shaft and a pair of electrostatic sensors that record the induced charge as the tag passes. A combined signal processing algorithm is employed to improve reliability and expand the measurement range (from 30 to 3000 rpm): autocorrelation is used at high speeds, while cross-correlation between the signals from the two electrodes is used at low speeds. Research have confirmed measurement accuracy of ±0.12 % in the range of 120…3000 rpm and ±3.4 % at 30…120 rpm. The proposed solution features high resistance to vibration, dust, and humidity, low cost, and minimal shaft modification requirements, making it a competitive alternative to optical and magnetic sensors.

Keywords: Automated control; Shaft; Triboelectric tag; Angular position; Reliability.
